Home services industry statistics
Verified home services statistics from the Census Bureau, BLS and labeled industry surveys: market size, workforce, seasonality, reviews and phone leads.

Key takeaways
- US homeowners spent $827 billion on home improvements from 2021 to 2023, and 64% of the 140 million projects were done by professionals, according to the Census Bureau's American Housing Survey.
- Demand for trades labor keeps growing: BLS projects HVAC jobs to grow 11% and electrician jobs 9% from 2025 to 2035.
- Seasonality is real and measurable: US landscaping employment ran about 34% higher in July 2025 than in January 2025.
- Call-tracking data from Invoca shows only 52% of inbound calls to home services businesses were answered by a person in 2026.
- Reputation drives the shortlist: 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses and 68% require at least four stars in BrightLocal's 2026 survey.
Home services is a huge market made of small businesses: HVAC and plumbing shops, electricians, roofers, lawn care crews and remodelers, most of them running on a phone, a truck and a calendar. This page collects verified data on how big the market is, who works in it, how seasonal it is, and how homeowners find, judge and contact the pros they hire.
How we built this list: we only include figures we could trace to the original source, and each one links to it. Market and workforce numbers come from the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Consumer behavior figures come from surveys by companies that sell to homeowners or contractors (Houzz, Angi, BrightLocal, Invoca, EZ Texting); we label those as vendor research. Last checked October 2026.
How big the market is

What this means for your team: the market is large, and most of it is paid work for professionals rather than weekend DIY. Median project values are modest, though: a homeowner spending a few thousand dollars on an HVAC repair compares quotes carefully. Clear, itemized quotes they can accept online help you win those jobs; see how to write a quote that wins the job.
Who does the work
- 440,900 HVAC mechanic and installer jobs in 2025, with a median wage of $61,010; employment is projected to grow 11% from 2025 to 2035 — BLS (2026 edition, 2025 data)
- 821,000 electrician jobs in 2025, median wage $63,190, projected growth 9% — BLS (2026 edition, 2025 data)

What this means for your team: skilled technicians are expensive and in demand, so their time is your scarcest resource. Every hour a tech spends chasing callbacks, retyping quotes or hunting for job notes is an hour not billed. That’s the main argument for putting leads, quotes, scheduling and invoices in one system instead of four.
Seasonality
- US landscaping services employment was about 756,000 in January 2025 and peaked at about 1,014,200 in July 2025, roughly 34% higher — BLS Current Employment Statistics (2025, not seasonally adjusted)
- The pattern repeated in 2024, from about 747,800 in January to a June peak of about 1,013,700 — BLS Current Employment Statistics (2024, not seasonally adjusted)

What this means for your team: for lawn care and landscaping, the spring ramp is when most new customers sign up and when you’re least able to answer the phone. Build your lead follow-up before March: set up form auto-replies, reminder texts and a way to cover calls during the busiest weeks. Winter is the time to re-engage last season’s customers with renewal quotes. Our home services page walks through a seasonal setup.

Repairs and maintenance outnumber renovations

Show the data
| Project | Share of recent pro-hirers |
|---|---|
| Maintenance | 63% |
| Repair | 58% |
| Renovation | 35% |
What this means for your team: repairs and maintenance are steadier than big renovations, and budget surprises are common. Quotes with clear line items, options and an expiry date set expectations up front. In Exa, quotes can be sent by email or text, accepted with a typed-name e-signature and converted to an invoice in one click. Our guide to quotes and proposals covers the details.
Reviews and reputation
- 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 41% always do — BrightLocal (vendor survey, 2026, n=1,002 US adults)
- 68% will only use a business with four stars or more, and 31% require 4.5 stars or more — BrightLocal (vendor survey, 2026, n=1,002)
- 89% expect business owners to respond to reviews — BrightLocal (vendor survey, 2026, n=1,002)
What this means for your team: your review profile is often the first impression a homeowner has. Ask for reviews right after a job is completed and paid, while the customer is happy, and reply to every review, including the critical ones.
Calls, response and booking
- 52% of inbound calls to home services businesses were answered by a person, ranging from 32% to 74% across sub-industries — Invoca (vendor data, 2026, anonymized calls tracked for Invoca customers in HVAC, plumbing, pest control, lawn and trees, restoration and other trades)
- 38% of answered calls were leads and 45% of those leads converted on the call — Invoca (vendor data, 2026)
- 55% of home services businesses didn’t ask phone leads to buy or book the job — Invoca (vendor data, 2026)
- 70% of consumers expect a business to reply to a text within one hour, and 42% say appointment reminders are a reason to opt in to business texts — EZ Texting (vendor survey, 2026, n=959 US consumers)

What this means for your team: the phone is where home services leads are won or lost. Answer more calls, and when you do, ask for the booking before you hang up. When nobody can pick up, Exa’s AI receptionist can answer, qualify the caller and book an appointment, saving the transcript to the lead’s timeline. Final thoughts
The government data shows a large, steady market: hundreds of billions of dollars a year in improvements, most of it done by professionals, with trades jobs projected to keep growing. The vendor surveys add the consumer side. Homeowners read reviews, expect quick replies and often go over budget, and many calls to home services businesses still go unanswered.
For a small home services team, the biggest wins are usually not more ads but better handling of the leads you already get: answer the phone, reply to texts within the hour, send clear quotes quickly and prepare for the busy season before it starts.
