Key differences
How Exa and Attio differ
Data model vs. ready-made workflow
Attio’s core idea is flexibility: standard objects for people, companies and deals, plus custom objects, attributes and lists you design yourself. That’s powerful for teams with unusual processes, but someone has to design it. Exa takes the opposite approach — leads, contacts, companies and deals are already connected, with lead conversion, scoring, duplicate detection and Kanban pipelines ready on day one. You add custom fields, not new objects.
Where conversations happen
Attio is built around email and calendar sync and records video calls on Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Texting, WhatsApp and phone calls come from apps in Attio’s app store. Exa builds those channels in: two-way SMS from your Twilio numbers, the WhatsApp Business Cloud API, email and AI voice calls all land in one inbox, threaded per contact.
AI that reads — and AI that answers the phone
Both products have an AI assistant that answers questions about your data and proposes changes for approval. Attio’s AI also does web research and enrichment. Exa’s AI extends to the phone: with a Vapi account connected, an AI receptionist answers inbound calls, qualifies the caller, checks availability and books appointments, and outbound AI calls can run from a record or an automation.
Compliance built into sending
Attio’s sequences include unsubscribe links and delivery windows. Exa enforces messaging rules server-side for every channel and every sender — a person, an automation or the AI: per-channel consent with stored evidence, STOP/START/HELP keywords, quiet hours in the recipient’s time zone and WhatsApp’s 24-hour window.
Making the call
Which one should you choose?
When to choose Attio
- You want to design your own data model — custom objects, lists and relationships — rather than adopt a fixed sales structure.
- Your sales motion runs on email, calendar and video calls, and you want those calls recorded with AI insights.
- You want companies and people enriched automatically, and an AI that can research the web and query your data.
- You want to start free with a small team and grow into paid plans.
When to choose Exa
- Your customers reply by text and WhatsApp, and you want those threads next to email and calls in one inbox — natively, not through add-on apps.
- You want an AI receptionist (via Vapi) to answer, qualify and book inbound calls and save the transcript to the lead.
- You need consent per channel, STOP/START/HELP keywords and quiet hours enforced server-side on every message.
- You want embeddable lead-capture forms with attribution and consent built in.
- You'd rather start with ready-made pipelines, lead scoring and duplicate detection than build a CRM from scratch.
Migration
Switching from Attio to Exa
Moving from Attio usually means exporting the People and Companies you sell to, then mapping Attio attributes to Exa fields. Custom objects beyond leads, contacts, companies and deals don't have a direct equivalent in Exa — keep the fields you need as custom fields.
- 1
Export your data from Attio
Export the people and companies you want to keep from Attio to CSV files. Keep the column headers — Exa uses them to suggest a mapping.
- 2
Import with column mapping and duplicate handling
Upload a CSV as leads or contacts, preview the rows and check the suggested mapping (custom fields included — create them first). Choose whether rows that match an existing record are skipped, update it, or are created anyway. Progress, counts and row errors are shown as the import runs.
- 3
Rebuild your pipeline and price book
Create pipelines with your own stages, probabilities and rotting rules, then recreate open deals by hand or through the REST API — CSV import covers leads and contacts, not deals. If you send quotes, add your products, services and tax rates to the price book, and connect QuickBooks Online if you use it.
- 4
Reconnect your lead sources
Embed Exa forms on your website, and send leads from other systems to the server-to-server lead API with a scoped API key — a lead with a matching email or phone is updated instead of duplicated. Signed webhooks push CRM events to your own tools.
- 5
Connect channels and invite your team
Connect Twilio for SMS, the WhatsApp Business Cloud API, Postmark or SMTP for email, Vapi for AI calls, Google Calendar and QuickBooks Online, then invite teammates as owner, admin, manager, rep or viewer. Exa only texts people with SMS consent (or who texted you first), so plan how you will record consent for imported contacts.

Is Exa a good Attio alternative?
It depends on how you sell. If you rely on Attio's flexible data model, custom objects and enrichment, Attio is hard to replace. If your team needs SMS, WhatsApp, AI voice calls and messaging compliance in the CRM itself, Exa covers those natively.
Does Exa have custom objects like Attio?
No. Exa has leads, contacts, companies and deals, each with custom fields (text, numbers, currency, dates, dropdowns and more). It doesn't let you create entirely new object types.
Does Exa enrich records automatically?
No. Exa doesn't include a contact database or data enrichment. It scores leads with explainable factors and detects duplicates, but you bring your own lead data.
How does each CRM's AI handle changes to my data?
Attio's help center says Ask Attio asks for approval before changing records. In Exa, any change the assistant proposes — creating a task, moving a deal, sending a message — becomes a confirmation card, and permissions are re-checked when you confirm.
Can I bring my Attio data into Exa?
Yes. Export your records to CSV, then use Exa's importer to map columns (including custom fields) and choose whether duplicates are skipped, updated or created.
